Moby Dick - Kid Classics

by Maïté Schmitt · A Whale of an Adventure

About the book

This young reader's retelling of Moby Dick follows a young sailor named Ishmael as he joins the crew of the whaling ship Pequod in the old port town of Nantucket. Under the command of the mysterious Captain Ahab, the voyage becomes a search for a great white whale that has haunted the captain for years. The story brings the salty world of nineteenth-century whaling to life for a new generation.

Why kids love it

Maïté Schmitt's adaptation keeps the drama and atmosphere of Melville's classic while making it readable and exciting for younger children. Readers are drawn into questions about courage, obsession, and the sea, and the vivid characters and suspenseful voyage make it a natural stepping stone to longer classics. It is a satisfying adventure that also invites thoughtful conversation about the choices people make.

Step into the world of Moby Dick - Kid Classics

The Spouter-Inn

A crooked old inn with dark wood beams and a smoky fireplace. Sailors swap tall tales over mugs of cider, and a mysterious harpoon hangs above the door. The innkeeper nods you toward a shared room, where a stranger's tattooed arm dangles off the bed.

Nantucket Wharf

Barrels of whale oil are stacked high, and sailors shout as they load supplies onto waiting ships. Ropes creak and gulls wheel overhead, and the smell of salt and fish is everywhere. The Pequod waits at the end of the pier, its masts reaching into the grey sky.

The Pequod's Deck

The deck tilts gently as the ship rides at anchor, and the smell of fresh tar fills your nose. Sailors coil ropes and sharpen harpoons, glancing nervously toward the captain's cabin. A strange, carved totem stands near the bow, watching the horizon.
